FAQ

We provide a safe, fun and stimulating environment for our children that encourages and supports them to explore, discover and learn through their own experiences.  We do this through structured and free play, which provides a wide range of activities and experiences allowing the children to develop their skills and foster a love of learning which will continue through the rest of their education.

It is essential that children enjoy their first experiences of learning as it provides the foundation for the wealth of information they will acquire in the years ahead.

Our nurturing environment values all children and supports the development of independence and self-esteem encouraging every child to reach their full potential.

We use “Development Matters” to help inform our curriculum. It is for all early years practitioners, for childminders and staff in nurseries, nursery schools, and nursery and reception classes in school.

It offers a top-level view of how children develop and learn. It helps up to design an effective early years curriculum, building on the strengths and meeting the needs of the children in our setting. It guides, but does not replace, professional judgement.

The curriculum consists of everything we want your children to experience, learn and be able to do. It must meet the requirements of the educational programmes in the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Children are welcomed by a member of staff at the bottom gate of the preschool building.

If you are picking up your child at lunchtime, please wait by the bottom gate and a member of staff will bring your child to you.

If you are picking up your child at the end of the afternoon, please come up through the gate and meet your child at the preschool building.

We aim to make Modbury Pre-School a welcoming place where children settle quickly and easily. When a child starts to attend, we explain the process to their parents and jointly decide on the best way to help the child to settle into the setting.

Our setting policy is to offer two settling in visits to new children. However, we will work closely with the parent/carer/guardian to decide what is best for the child.

Please contact us to discuss this further.

We believe that children settle best when they have a key person to relate to.

We allocate a key worker before a child starts with us. Your key worker will meet with you before your child starts to look through your application form with you, to allow you to ask any questions and to find out more information about your child and family.

Your key worker will also be in charge of your child’s development at pre-school. They will have a comprehensive knowledge of their key children. They will know what levels of development they are at and in what areas.  This is documented in ‘Famly’ which you will have access to and can upload your experiences from home.  They will plan next steps in your child’s learning each term to ensure development.  If you would like to talk to someone about your child, your first port of call will be their keyworker.

We use a software package called Famly to communicate with parents. It can be accessed by an internet browser or via the Famly app. We post termly newsletters; offer keyworker meetings; the learning diary and stay and play sessions.

You can also view your child’s learning journal using the Famly package. It is updated regularly with photos and comments on your child’s progress.

You can interact with this by adding your videos and photos from home and making comments. You can look at this information with your child and discuss their work and activites.

Parents can also communicate with us and receive invoices securely through this package.

We are involved in a number of community events including the Modbury May Fair, the Christmas Lights Celebration and the school sports day. We have links with local play groups and are regularly visited by key people in the community including the vicar, the fire service, the vet, the dentist and the police. We take the children on outings (library, residential home, local play parks) and annually go on a bus ride to an adventure park. These activities are currently on hold but we look forward to learning new ways of engaging with our community.
